Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO): How to Get Your App Recommended by AI

How to optimise your content so ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI recommend your app.

What Is Answer Engine Optimisation and Why Does It Matter for Apps?

Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) is the practice of structuring your content so AI-powered search platforms (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and others) cite and recommend it when generating answers. Unlike traditional SEO, where you compete for one of ten blue links, AI search produces a single synthesised answer that cites three to eight sources. You are either one of those sources, or you do not exist.

The numbers make this urgent. Gartner predicted that traditional search engine volume would drop 25 percent by 2026 as users shift to AI chatbots and virtual agents (Gartner, February 2024). ChatGPT alone now processes roughly 2.5 billion prompts per day, and its weekly active users surged from 300 million in December 2024 to 800 million by October 2025. Meanwhile, AI referral traffic grew 527 percent year-over-year across measured properties in early 2025, and visitors arriving from AI search convert at 4.4 to 5 times the rate of traditional organic search.

For app developers, this represents a new acquisition channel that most competitors have not yet optimised for.

How AI Answer Engines Decide What to Recommend

Before you optimise, you need to understand how these engines select sources. AI answer engines do not crawl the web in real time the way a traditional search engine does. They rely on a combination of training data, retrieval-augmented generation (live web lookups at query time), and structured data signals. Three factors determine whether your content gets cited:

Topical authority. The engine needs to recognise your domain as a credible source on the topic. This means consistent, deep coverage, not a single blog post.

Answer-ready formatting. Content that directly answers a question in a clear, structured way is far more likely to be pulled into an AI-generated response than content that buries the answer in narrative.

Third-party corroboration. AI engines cross-reference information. If your claims are echoed by reviews on G2, Reddit threads, App Store reviews, and independent blog posts, the engine is more likely to surface your content.

1. Build Answer Hubs Around High-Value Queries

Identify the questions your target users ask AI engines. Queries like "best fitness app for beginners" or "how to track affiliate sales in a mobile app" are the new battleground. For each query, create a dedicated page that leads with a direct, concise answer in the first paragraph, then expands with supporting detail, data, and context.

Structure content with clear H2 headings that mirror natural questions. AI engines parse heading structures to identify discrete answers within longer content.

2. Implement Detailed Schema Markup

Schema markup is the single most underused lever in AEO. By adding deeply nested JSON-LD structured data (SoftwareApplication schema for your app, FAQPage schema for support content, HowTo schema for tutorials), you feed AI engines machine-readable facts about your app's pricing, features, platform availability, and ratings.

At a minimum, your app's landing page should include SoftwareApplication schema with the applicationCategory, operatingSystem, offers, and aggregateRating properties filled in.

3. Dominate Entity Recognition

AI engines build knowledge graphs of entities: people, products, organisations, and concepts. To establish your app as a recognised entity, ensure consistent naming across every platform: your website, App Store listing, Google Play listing, social profiles, Crunchbase, Product Hunt, and review sites. Every mention reinforces the entity.

A Wikipedia page or Wikidata entry, if your app qualifies, dramatically increases entity recognition. At the very least, ensure your app has a complete Crunchbase profile and consistent structured data.

4. Earn Third-Party Citations

AI engines weight third-party sources heavily. A recommendation on a trusted review site carries more weight than your own marketing copy. Actively pursue coverage on sites like G2, Product Hunt, and relevant industry blogs. Encourage detailed App Store and Google Play reviews that mention specific features and use cases.

Reddit mentions are particularly valuable. Perplexity pulls heavily from Reddit threads, and ChatGPT's training data includes substantial Reddit content. Genuine, helpful participation in relevant subreddits, not spam, builds the kind of third-party signal that AI engines trust.

5. Prioritise Freshness

Perplexity in particular has a strong freshness bias. A one-week-old blog post on an authoritative domain gets cited more readily than a two-year-old evergreen post. Maintain a publishing cadence and update existing content with current data, dates, and references. Add "last updated" dates to your content and keep them current.

6. Optimise for Conversational Queries

Users ask AI engines questions in natural language: "What is the best way to set up affiliate marketing for my app?" rather than typing "app affiliate marketing setup." Write content that matches conversational phrasing. Use question-based headings. Include FAQ sections that address follow-up questions a user might ask after the initial answer.

Measuring Your AEO Performance

Traditional rank tracking does not apply to AI search. Instead, monitor these signals:

AI referral traffic. In Google Analytics 4, track referral traffic from chat.openai.com, perplexity.ai, and other AI domains. Segment this traffic to measure conversion rates against other channels.

Brand mention monitoring. Use tools that track where your brand appears across AI answer engines. Several platforms now monitor citations, brand mentions, and share of voice across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini.

Manual testing. Regularly query AI engines with your target questions and note whether your app or content appears in responses. Document this over time to track trends.

How AEO Strengthens Your Affiliate Programme

If you run an affiliate programme for your app through a platform like Insert Affiliate, AEO has a compounding effect. When AI engines recommend your app, they often cite the content that affiliates and bloggers have written about it. This means every affiliate review, tutorial, and comparison post becomes a potential source for AI-generated recommendations.

Encourage your affiliates to structure their content using AEO best practices: clear answers, schema markup, and specific feature mentions. When an affiliate's blog post gets cited by ChatGPT or Perplexity as a recommendation for your app, both you and the affiliate benefit from the resulting traffic and conversions.

Start Now: the Window Is Closing

AEO is still early enough that most app developers have not optimised for it. That window will not stay open. As more brands invest in AEO, the competition for those three to eight citation slots will intensify. The developers who build topical authority, implement structured data, and earn third-party mentions now will be the ones AI engines recommend when the next wave of users asks for an app like yours.
