Stripe Affiliate Tracking

Stripe takes the payment but does not know which affiliate sent the customer. Insert Affiliate adds that: every Stripe Checkout sale and renewal is credited to the affiliate who drove it, and their commission is paid out through Stripe.

How it works

If you sell through Stripe, you already have the payment side of an affiliate program. What Stripe does not do is hand out affiliate links, work out which partner brought each customer, or calculate what that partner is owed.

Insert Affiliate does those jobs on top of your existing Stripe account. An affiliate shares a link or a short code, a customer pays through Stripe Checkout, and the sale appears against that affiliate with their commission already worked out.

This page covers what is tracked, how setup works, how affiliates are paid, and what to do if you sell in a mobile app as well as on the web.

How it fits together

Setting it up

  1. Step 1

    Connect your Stripe account

Turn on Stripe web payments in your Insert Affiliate settings and connect your existing Stripe account, or create a new one.

  2. Step 2

    Pass the affiliate to Checkout

The Insert Affiliate JavaScript SDK tells you which affiliate sent each visitor. Your developer adds that to the Stripe Checkout session as metadata, which is a few lines of code.

  3. Step 3

    Add affiliates and set commission

Invite partners yourself or let them apply. Each gets a link, a short code and their own dashboard. Pay a percentage or a fixed amount, on the first payment only or on renewals too.

  4. Step 4

    Pay them through Stripe

Insert Affiliate works out what each affiliate is owed. Pay with a click, or turn on automatic payouts and have an invoice generated for every payment.

How do you run an affiliate program on Stripe?

Stripe handles checkout, subscriptions and billing. An affiliate program needs three more things, and none of them are part of Stripe itself:

  • A link or code for each affiliate, so there is something to share.
  • A record of which affiliate drove each sale, which has to survive from the first click to the payment.
  • A way to work out and pay commission, including on renewals.

You add these with affiliate software that connects to your Stripe account. Insert Affiliate is one such tool. Once it is connected, your checkout stays exactly as it is and each sale simply carries the name of the affiliate behind it.

What does Insert Affiliate track in Stripe?

  • Stripe Checkout purchases, both one-off payments and subscriptions.
  • The first payment of a subscription.
  • Subscription renewals, so you can keep paying an affiliate for as long as their customer stays.

By default commission is worked out on the full invoice. If an invoice mixes several products and only some should earn commission (a subscription but not a setup fee, for example), you can list the Stripe prices that count and the rest are left out.

How does the tracking work?

  1. A visitor arrives through an affiliate's link, or types the affiliate's short code on your site.
  2. When that visitor goes to pay, your site adds the affiliate's code to the Stripe Checkout session.
  3. Stripe takes the payment as normal.
  4. Insert Affiliate sees the payment, credits it to the affiliate and calculates their commission.

Your developer does step 2 once, using the Stripe setup guide. After that, new affiliates need no extra work.

How are affiliates paid?

Payouts also run through Stripe, using Stripe Connect. Each affiliate connects their own Stripe account, and you pay them from the Insert Affiliate dashboard.

  • Pay with a click when you are ready.
  • Or turn on automatic payouts and let them go out without you.
  • An invoice is generated for every payment, so there is a record on both sides.

Affiliates see their own clicks, sales and earnings in their dashboard, which cuts out the messages asking what they are owed.

What if you sell in a mobile app as well?

This is where most Stripe affiliate tools stop. They track the web checkout and cannot see purchases made through the App Store or Google Play.

Stripe-only affiliate tools Insert Affiliate
Stripe Checkout purchases Yes Yes
Stripe subscription renewals Yes Yes
App Store and Google Play purchases No Yes
Short codes typed inside an app No Yes
RevenueCat, Adapty, Apphud and Iaptic No Yes
Affiliate payouts through Stripe Connect Varies Yes

Insert Affiliate tracks Stripe sales on the web and in-app purchases on iOS and Android in one place. An affiliate has one link, one short code and one dashboard, whichever way their customers end up paying. If you use RevenueCat with Stripe billing, there is a guide for that setup too.

For the full list of what the product does, see affiliate software for mobile apps.

Who is it for?

  • Software and subscription businesses that sell through Stripe on the web.
  • Apps with a web checkout as well as in-app purchases, who want one affiliate program across both.
  • Mobile apps moving some sales to the web, who need affiliates credited either way.

It is not designed for online shops that sell physical products.

How does it compare with other Stripe affiliate tools?

The comparison pages set Insert Affiliate beside other affiliate tools one at a time, including Rewardful and Tapfiliate, with what each is built for and where each is the better choice.

Frequently asked questions

Does Stripe have an affiliate program feature?
Not built in. Stripe takes payments and manages subscriptions, but it does not create affiliate links, record which affiliate drove a sale or calculate commission. You add that with affiliate software that connects to your Stripe account, such as Insert Affiliate.
Can I earn commission for recommending Stripe itself?
That is a different thing. Stripe runs its own partner programme, which you can read about on the Stripe website. This page is about running an affiliate program for your own product, with Stripe taking the payments.
Do I have to change my checkout?
No. You keep using Stripe Checkout as you do now. The only change is that your site passes the affiliate code to Stripe when the checkout session is created.
Can I pay commission on subscription renewals?
Yes. Renewals are tracked, and you choose whether an affiliate earns on the first payment only or on renewals as well.
How are Stripe affiliate payouts sent?
Through Stripe Connect. Each affiliate connects their own Stripe account, Insert Affiliate works out what they are owed, and you pay with a click or switch on automatic payouts. An invoice is generated for every payment.
Does it work with in-app purchases too?
Yes. Insert Affiliate tracks Stripe purchases on the web and in-app purchases and subscriptions on iOS and Android, and credits both to the same affiliate.
Do I need a developer?
For a short one-off task: adding the affiliate code to your Stripe Checkout session. After that, adding affiliates, setting commission and paying people is all done from the dashboard.
Is it free to try?
Yes. You can sign up and go live without a credit card.
